A Closer Look: Curating at the Intersection of Art and Spirituality

August 19
7 PM - 9 PM
Talks & Panels
Programs

How can we thoughtfully and inclusively approach sacred practices, rituals, materials, and traditions within the contemporary art context? How are artists inviting us as curators and as institutions to explore the spiritual issues and contexts that inform their work? Using their own curated exhibitions and projects as case studies, join us for a moderated discussion around what it means to curate at the intersection of art and spirituality.

Participating curators: Amanda Sroka, curator of Speaking in Tongues at ICA LA; Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander, curator of Spirit House at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University; Cara Megan Lewis, Deputy Director at The Wende Museum and former co-director of Bridge projects; and Pablo José Ramírez, curator of Several Eternities in a Day at the Hammer Museum. Moderator: Tyler Rollins, Executive Director, Foundation for Spirituality and the Arts.

A Closer Look is a program series to explore contemporary curatorial practice. Curators are invited to participate in critical conversations that reveal the ambitions and challenges of making exhibitions. Topics may be sparked by an exhibition at ICA LA, or they may address a pressing issue in the field.

This program is realized in collaboration with and through support from the Foundation for Spirituality and the Arts.

In 2008, he opened a public gallery space, Tyler Rollins Fine Art, in New York City’s Chelsea arts district, with a program focusing on leading mid-career artists from Southeast Asia. Widely acknowledged internationally as one of the most prominent and pioneering gallerists in his field, Rollins presented museum-quality exhibitions over a twelve-year period at his gallery, which was described by the New York Times as “one of the most reliably interesting spaces in Chelsea.” The gallery’s exhibitions often highlighted the links between spirituality, nature, cultural traditions, and varied forms of artistic expression, and many had powerful religious themes relating to Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism.

Recognizing the need for intentionally reflective spaces in the contemporary art world, Rollins founded FSA in 2021. The Foundation fosters and supports wide-ranging artistic and scholarly explorations of human creativity – from its ineffable sources, to its sustenance, and to its capacity to express shared human values. In his role as Executive Director, he spearheads FSA’s strategic vision, institutional partnerships, and community engagements. He works regularly with both art and faith institutions as a speaker, advisor, and thought partner.
