Radical Pedagogies

August 20, 2020
5 PM - 7 PM
Special Projects
Field Workshop

A project that instigates conversation, thinking, and action around the state of education and the ways it reinscribes the violences and inequities it purports to undo.

An open discussion will be held on Aug 20, 5pm-7pm via ZOOM. Pre-registration required.

Artists: Johanna Breiding, EJ Hill, Dylan Mira, Litia Perta, Kandis Williams

Johanna Breiding
Johanna Breiding is an interdisciplinary artist that employs analog and digital technologies to archive queer narratives and underrepresented voices. Through an interdisciplinary approach and varying forms of collaboration, Johanna Breiding depicts the importance of kinship and intergenerational exchange via autobiography, historical events, and the landscape as witness. They have exhibited widely throughout the US and Europe and have received numerous awards including the DAAD and Rema Hort Mann Award. They are a facilitator of the arts and have been actively teaching photography and theory at various institutions including the San Francisco Art Institute, California Institute of the Arts, the New York Film Academy and Scripps College over the last years. Currently Johanna Breiding is an Assistant Professor in the Art and Art History Department at Williams College and spends their time between LA and Western Massachusetts.

EJ Hill
EJ Hill is a visual artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Much of what he knows, he has learned from: Estelle Thompson, Karen Thompson, Ernest Hill Jr., Margaret Nomentana, Joan Giroux, Adam Brooks and Mat Wilson (Industry of the Ordinary), Andrea Fraser, Matt Austin, Young Chung, Jordan Casteel, TLC, Lauryn Hill, and Augie Grahn. He is forever indebted to these educators and thanks them endlessly.

Dylan Mira
Mira, Na, subrosal coil, autobody fabrication, cosmologies, drop out re search,

Litia Perta
Litia Perta is a writer and teacher whose work tangles at the crossroads of deepening embodiment, institutional critique, and reimagining ways to live aligned with the truths of transformation, care, and equanimity. She recently quit her job as a university professor and moved to a tiny off the grid island in the Salish Sea where she is being supported by the kindnesses of friends and family.

Kandis Williams
Kandis Williams (b. 1985, Baltimore, Maryland) has had recent solo shows at Night Gallery, Los Angeles; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; and Ficken 3000. In Fall 2020, the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University will open Kandis Williams: A Field, a multi-stage solo exhibition curated by Amber Esseiva highlighting all aspects of William’s practice, which will run through Summer 2021 as part of the Museum’s Provocations commission series. Williams has an active curatorial and pedagogical practice, and runs Cassandra Press. Her performances have been mounted in clubs and institutions across the world. She is currently a visiting faculty member at the California Institute of the Arts. Williams lives and works in Los Angeles.
